Langres, a superb town of Art and History, is classed as being one of the 50 most beautiful towns in France. With its elevated ramparts, 7 gates, 12 impressive towers and its numerous bell towers, it stands as a proud fortress at the gates of Champagne and Bourgogne. By walking around the 3.6km of rampart path, which demonstrates Langres's long military history, you can admire the vast panorama that stretches out over the verdant valleys of the Bonnelle and the Marne.
About a hundred years ago, the landscapes that surrounded the town were fitted out with 4 lake reservoirs, built to feed the canal from the Marne to the Saône. From the Langres ramparts, (you can see how vast the distance is between them), you can see the Lac de la Liez, which stretches over 290 hectares with a dam 460 metres long and 16 metres high. After the villages of Peigney and Bannes, there's the Lac de Charmes which you can see outlined on the horizon. It is long and narrow and offers a total of 197 hectares of water which are famous for fishing.
If you go past Lannes, you will be able to see the lovely view offered by Entre Deux Mont, then you can go down via Hûmes to get to the Vallée de la Mouche until you reach the lake of the same name. This lake has a dam that is 410 metres long, built as a semi-viaduct. Further upstream in the upper Vallée de la Mouche, you will discover picturesque villages like Vieux-Moulins and Noidant-le-Rocheux. When you get to Flagey, you will change your direction and descend the slope towards the Vingeanne, passing Baissey and its water mill.
The longest embankment of the 4 lakes (1254 metres) is the one built for the Lac de la Vingeanne (199ha). Famed for having great winds for windsurfing, this lake is also of interest to ornithologists who come to observe the comings and goings and the migrations of numerous species.
