This village is located at one of the sources supplying the Tille de Villemervry, with Lamargelle-aux-Bois. Because it is situated in a valley on the flat of the Langres plateau, it is possible that the 12th century Chese messein form, indicates hidden houses (Latin Casa) (from the old French musser). The place was already inhabited in Roman times, as evidenced by the remains of Gallo-Roman dwellings at Champ Dolent against the present village, and by the poorly dated cremations discovered in a sand quarry overlooking the village...
